The 2017 Scrappage Charity Rally 

TUESDAY 29TH AUGUST – MONDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2017 

It’s here….. Scrappage Rally 2017! We thought we would flip the 2017 Rally on its head and offer a quirky experience that no other rally company has offered to date. The main challenge for this rally is to create a vehicle in to a make shift camper van which WILL be your accommodation for first 4 nights on this years adventure, Bear Grylls you have nothing on us.

Our adventure will once again start from just south of Norwich at The Bird In Hand Wreningham before we depart to start this years adventure. We will look to drive circa 1700 miles in 4 days before we reach the beautiful Romanian Town of Cluj where you can unwind as you swap the boot of your car for the bed of a hotel room! We have 48 hours here so make the most of it! We will be organising group trips to one of the breath taking Romanian salt mines that are on offer, if this isn’t your cup of tea then maybe a bar where the beer costs £1 a pint is more up your street?

We are lucky enough to be joined on this rally by Romanian born Ciprian whose home town is Cluj – he will be our tour guide and can answer any questions and advice you may have and also we will be joined by Alistair who has lived in Cluj for 5 years and can recommend local restaurants and bars where you can unwind and relax.

The cost of this year’s rally is a just £199.00 Per person based on a team minimum of two people. This price includes all of the following:

  1. Your entry including your rally pack
  2. Your ferry crossing to France
  3. 2x Nights Accommodation in Cluj Romania
  4. Your return coach from Luton International To The Bird In Hand (NB If you book on to the recommended flight we suggest.)

  6. A Romanian travel guide helping you make the most of your time in Cluj

WE HAVE DECIDED TO REDUCE THE COST OF THE RALLY BY £100.00 to JUST £199.00 PER PERSON DUE TO THE MASSIVE INCREASE IN COSTS FOR BOOKING GROUP FLIGHTS. YOU MAY HAVE THOUGHT THE BIGGER THE BOOKING THE CHEAPER THE FLIGHT BUT IT WORKS IN THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE WAY. IT IS CHEAPER FOR YOU TO BOOK YOUR FLIGHTS INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A RESULT COULD SAVE YOU UP TO £70.00 PER PERSON! FLIGHT COMPANIES ARE VERY CLEVER AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT THE BEST RATES CAN BE OBTAINED BY BOOKING THEM A MONTH PRIOR TO THE RALLY.

WE ARE RECOMMENDING RALLY PARTICIPANTS TO BOOK ON TO THE 18:05 FLIGHT TO LONDON LUTON WHICH ARRIVES AT 19:05 MONDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2017 LOCAL TIME!

Do we need to raise money for charity like previous years? That’s up to you! You will be helping local charities by leaving your car in Romania as we have arranged for these to be purchased, with the cars going to help locals in need and the funds earned going to help a charity back home.

What if my car breaks down?

Probably the most asked question we get. Firstly most cars will make it, secondly your fellow ralliers will very likely come to your aid. If you are really worried about breakdown, people like the AA will offer European cover. The main thing to remember is it is an adventure and its all part of the fun.

Who are Magnitude Events?

We are professional event organisers, we have been running the Scrappage Rally for 7 years now. These events are a culmination of our passions and experiences.

What is a Scrappage Rally?

A good question that only you can really answer. Far be it for us to dictate your idea of what fun is, it is down to you and the rest of the occupants of your car. The main thing is to enter the spirit of the event and make a little effort. Just like life (and just like the rally) the more you put in the more you get out.

What can I spend on my car?

The car / MPV should cost no more than £500 How much you spend on it afterwards is entirely down to you.

How much does the whole thing cost?

Of course there are things like petrol and food to think of. It really depends on you to be honest, how you drive, what car you have and how much you eat. However, if you are like us and drive a 2.4 litre Petrol Toyota Previa and eat like a horse it will of course costs a little more. We estimate 4-5 tanks of fuel to get you to Cluj

My car cost £507.50

The fact is the spirit of the event is what is important, we can’t prove you bought it for £507.50 nor can you prove you bought it for a quid, and quite frankly even if we did ask for proof there are some creative ways to get around that anyway.

Where do I get such a machine for so little?

Ebay would be our first call, remember to modify your search (ie filter out by price and distance) otherwise you will be scrolling through loads of pages. You’ll be surprised what you can pick up! Local garages take in part-exchange and there are always those roadside cars, these are surprisingly good. We suggest buying a car with an MOT till the end of the rally, unless you know what you are doing, or trust the seller to tell you what is needed.

How much does it cost to enter?

£199.00 per person based on a team which constitutes of 2 people and one car. You can have a maximum of 4 people per team. There is a £15.00 ferry excess if your vehicle is larger than your average family people carrier.

Will my car make it?

Nearly all cars make the trip. If your car will run without too much clunking and smoke, it should be fine for the 1700 miles or so. It’s amazing what you can pick up if you look around and bargain enough.

Do I need to be a mechanic?

No! Although we would suggest taking along a car manual, you really don’t need to know how to strip an engine and re build it. There will be people on the rally who will be happy to help out if anything happens.

What else do I need?

Insurance, MOT, and driving licence, Warning triangle, luminous jackets, fire extinguisher, first aid kit and breathalyser to comply with EU law. And PASSPORT! You will need to book and pay for your return flight the cost of this varies on availability flight prices fluctuate massively you can expect to pay between £25 and £125 for a return flight to London Luton from Cluj international airport.

What about insurance?

If you have fully comprehensive cover on your current car you should have cover on your banger. Can I change people, cars, names, hair colour, socks etc?

The answer to all of the above is yes! However some charges may apply if we incur costs! IE Flight name changes

Why minimum drivers?

The minimum is two drivers. It’s for your own safety (which we do care about believe it or not). One, it is a far better experience; Two you shouldn’t drive too long without a break, especially in a foreign country where you have to concentrate a little more. And finally, you don’t want to break down on your tod. Can a non driver go? Yes they can as long as there are two drivers in the car

Support

Support is mostly each other, we don’t have breakdown cover but if you phone us we will let all cars know your location to see if they can help (more often than not they will). We will pop by if we can.

Can I use a sat nav?

YES we recommend you bring one. Ensure it has European maps loaded on to it and is compatible accross Europe.

Do I need a car before signing up?

No

When is the close date?

Last registrations need to be made by 1st July 2017, unless the rally is full, you will see when the rally is full by a great big sign saying “rally full” we are good like that. It only takes a week to buy a car and get it Pimped (depending on what you are doing with it, it does however take a little longer for DVLA to get themselves sorted so give that min 4 weeks.

Are there any rules on car themes?

No politics.

When do I need to pay the whole amount?

2 Months before the Rally

Is the non refundable deposit refundable?

What sort of people attend your events?

Nice ones… of any age… If you’re not nice then don’t bother booking.

What are the rules?

Don’t ever disrespect anyone on the rally

I am from another country other than the UK may I join?

We welcome anyone from any country and you are very welcome and encouraged to join. Please be aware this is an English speaking rally though. We know you nutty Norwegians like the idea of these rallies.

What about accommodation?

Your car is your accommodation. We could have picked campsites and made you stay at various sites along the way but to make the adventure cost effective and more affordable we thought we would leave that up to you and give you the choice to where you want to stay. We will let you know the reccommended way points where we will be stopping off at and you’re more than welcome to join us. This is your rally and it’s up to you where you rest your head for the first 4 nights.

Can I be disqualified?

Yes, there are a few simple rules. If you are a moron you will be disqualified from the rally. Being a moron means the following: disrespecting or abusing anyone on the rally (if you don’t like someone just talk to other people). Drinking is not an excuse for being a numpty. Do not interfere with someone else’s car, whilst bashing bumpers may seem like a laugh to you it could be different for the recipient, same goes for any additions to their paint jobs.
